The oldest surviving business in Falls Church, Brown’s Hardware, is selling off the last of its wares as it prepares to close for good after 142 years.

The past few weeks have been busy but somber as patrons shuffle in to say goodbye, owner John Taylor told ARLnow. With about a fifth of all inventory remaining and an across-the-board 50% off sale, the store is on track to close at 100 W. Broad Street by the third week of March.

Preparations to demolish the shuttered Ballston Macy’s have begun as several hundred apartments and an as-yet-unnamed grocery store are expected in 2028.

Interior work began last month at 685 N. Glebe Road, where general contractor John Moriarty & Associates hopes to receive a demolition permit “any day now” and, if all goes as expected, complete demolition by August.

A new shop offering acai bowls, smoothies and other nutritious treats has opened for business in Courthouse.

With a vibrant, surfer-inspired atmosphere and tagline, “Welcome to Pineappleland,” Playa Bowls is bringing treats packed with fresh fruit to 2055 15th Street N. It is the company’s first Arlington location, joining nearby outposts in Alexandria, Fairfax and D.C.

A skincare studio offering monthly facial memberships plans to open this summer in Clarendon.

With personalized, 30-minute “results-driven” facials from licensed estheticians, Glowbar expects to open between July and September at 2930 Clarendon Blvd, founder Rachel Liverman told ARLnow. The address currently houses a Verizon store.

The holiday shopping rush will continue after Black Friday with a local Small Business Saturday push.

Twenty-two stores and restaurants in Arlington and Falls Church are slated to participate in the program, which will go through Sunday this year.

The former space of a D.C.-based pizzeria remains vacant in Rosslyn after the restaurant closed over the summer.

A few months after &pizza’s closure at 1800 N. Lynn Street, the restaurant’s kitchenware and checkered tiles can still be seen inside. Recent permits do not indicate a new tenant at the property, which houses several other restaurants, including Nando’s Peri-Peri Chicken, sweetgreen, Happy Eatery food hall and McDonald’s.

A restaurant, brewery and ax throwing venue plans to open in what is currently the ground floor of Barnes & Noble at The Crossing Clarendon.

Three Notch’d Brewing Company is expected to open in 2026 as the bookstore consolidates into its upper level at 2800 Clarendon Blvd, April Laney, a senior leasing agent for property owner Regency Centers, told ARLnow.

A Jersey Mike’s and a new CVS Pharmacy are in the works on Columbia Pike.

Both businesses are expected to open on the ground floor of Westmont Apartments at the corner of the Pike and S. Glebe Road, alongside other planned establishments including a Five Guys and a cosmetic studio.

A whole new cast of retail and service characters is developing under The Grace and Reva apartments in Crystal City.

Veterinary hospital GoodVets is the newest in a series of tenants at 1900 Crystal Drive — including a cafe, a nail salon and a bar — announced by property owner JBG Smith. These will all join the recently opened Tatte and Van Leeuwen.

With 85 days to go before Halloween, early signs of the spooky season are appearing in some Arlington stores.

ARLnow spotted a small assortment of Halloween-inspired items at two of five stores we stopped by along the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor.


News

Virginia’s three-day tax holiday begins next Friday, Aug. 2, marking a weekend of discounted shopping for back-to-school season and hurricane preparedness supplies, among other goods.

Starting Friday and ending on Sunday, Aug. 4, eligible items will be sold across the state without sales tax.

A new European clothing store is now open at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City.

Spanish fast-fahion retailer Mango opened this past Wednesday, July 24 on the mall’s second level near Haggar. Mango has clothing for adults and kids in addition to home decor, though the Pentagon City location mostly sells women’s apparel.
