P. Brennan’s on Columbia Pike to Close Tomorrow

It’s the end of the road for P. Brennan’s Irish Pub and Restaurant at 2910 Columbia Pike.

The cavernous local pub will shutter after closing on Friday. Owner Brian Dolphin, who also owned the ill-fated McGinty’s near Potomac Yard, says P. Brennan’s “did pretty well” by staying in business for seven years, but never made much money.

Senators Tour Proposed Cemetery Expansion — The Army gave a group of U.S. senators a tour of a proposed expansion area for Arlington National Cemetery yesterday. The expansion, around the Air Force Memorial, would create space for 40,000 to 60,000 gravesites while requiring a realignment of Columbia Pike. Military officials are hoping to open the expansion by 2023 but a land swap with Arlington County and Virginia has still not been completed. [Stars and Stripes]

Arlington Man Killed in D.C. — An Arlington resident, 31-year-old Antwan Jones, was shot to death Tuesday afternoon while sitting in an BMW in Southeast D.C. A second man was injured in the shooting. [Washington Post]

DEVELOPING: Bus Crashes into Pentagon City Apartment Building

(Updated at 9:35 a.m.) A PRTC commuter bus smashed into the side of the Lenox Club apartment building in Pentagon City Wednesday evening.

The crash happened just before 6 p.m., along 12th Street S. The bus, which was not carrying passengers at the time, hopped the curb, struck the front of a convertible and ran into a storefront on the side of the building.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Tanner

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Tanner, a golden retriever/cavalier King Charles mix with a huge heart. Here is what his owner, Tania, had to say about him:

I am writing to brag about my adorable little pup, Tanner! Anyone who knows me well knows that I could talk about this boy for hours. Tanner is the first dog I have ever had, and he has been the biggest joy. I had always begged my parents for one growing up, and when I lost my father very unexpectedly on Christmas Eve 2014, I couldn’t think of a better way to help me overcome the indescribable pain. He’s been a shoulder to cry on, partner in crime and best buddy. He has extremely fluffy ears, he is ALWAYS smiling and always smells like oranges. I think it’s funny how dogs can’t understand you, can’t speak, sniff you, make weird faces, lick/bite you but become the very best friends you will ever have (think about that with humans). Can’t imagine my life without this little guy.

Petition Calls for APS to Discontinue iPad Program for Elementary Schools

The Change.org petition has just over 150 signatures as of Wednesday morning.

“Parents, teachers, pediatricians, librarians, art therapists, poets, doctors and taxpayers of Arlington County are asking that APS discontinue immediately the current 1:1 iPad program within APS elementary schools for grades K-5,” the petition says. “The 1:1/Digital Learning/Personalized programs, which put a personal iPads in the hand of elementary school children, over the past three years has not only cost millions for devices, staffing and infrastructure, but it has put children into a social experiment that is likely to harm their physical and social-emotional well-being.”

Crime Report: Man Arrested for Impersonating Police After Maintenance Dispute

The latest incident happened around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 900 block of S. Dinwiddie Street, near the Arlington Mill Community Center along Columbia Pike.

Police say a resident refused to let a worker performing emergency maintenance work into his apartment Tuesday morning, then confronted management that afternoon while wearing a ballistic vest and claiming to be a law enforcement officer, prompting a call to police.

Gov. Recommends Changes to Towing Bill — Gov. Terry McAuliffe has sent a trespass towing bill back to the General Assembly with significant recommended changes. Slower job growth and a high cost of living were blamed as possible reasons for the outflow.

We have previously predicted that Arlington will struggle to retain millennial residents as they start having families due to the high cost of housing and childcare. Those millennials may seek greener pastures outside the region, particularly in the kinds of cities that saw a net influx of domestic migration: Phoenix, Dallas, Seattle and Houston.
